Fabric Story — Big Smoke
Big Smoke celebrates graphic artist MacDonald Gill’s charming and witty illustrated guide to London, originally published in 1914. Inspired by Gill’s delightfully detailed cartographic vision of the capital, the design reimagines London landmarks through humour, curiosity, and storytelling — transforming the city map into something playful, richly layered, and full of character.
 
The title itself nods to London’s long-standing nickname, “The Big Smoke”, once used to describe the city’s dense industrial skyline and lively urban rhythm. To us, the print feels less like a map and more like a pocket-sized adventure through old London — detailed, slightly eccentric, and endlessly enjoyable to revisit.
 
At Bōlife, we were drawn to its sense of curiosity and quiet humour. It reminded us of folded city maps tucked into pockets, illustrated travel books, and the joy of wandering unfamiliar streets without rushing. When transformed into our handmade fabric phone clothes and MagSafe card holders, we imagined Big Smoke as a small everyday companion — something practical, tactile, and quietly carrying a sense of place, memory, and adventure.
